Danielle Kim
Byron Hester Winner 2025
Danielle Kim’s journey with flute playing began when she started taking lessons
while living abroad in India. Throughout her international childhood, she has studied with
various flute instructors including Jihoon Shin of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and Leah
Arsenault of the National Symphony Orchestra. She was a winner in the National YoungArts
Foundation competition and is a former fellow of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival,
Spoleto Festival U.S.A, and NYO-USA.
Danielle has won the Artist Presentation Society Young Artist Competition, William
C. Byrd Young Artist Competition, Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Instrumental Scholarship
Competition, Central Ohio Flute Association Collegiate Competition, Flute Society of
Greater Philadelphia Collegiate Competition, and the Mid-Atlantic Flute Society Collegiate
Soloist Competition. Danielle received her M.M. at The Colburn School studying with Jim
Walker and her B.M. from the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Amy Porter.
Additional mentors include Marianne Gedigian, Sarah Frisof, Alberto Almarza, Youn Young
Yi, and Saeyoung Bae. Beyond the flute, Danielle enjoys learning new skills and has worked
in luxury hospitality, lifeguarding, philanthropy, marketing & communications, and being a personal assistant to international contemporary artist Claire Chase.
